The training delivered through the course is Lantra approved, meaning our course meets the standards expected for professional development in the field. You’ll also receive a certificate of attendance from Lantra once you have completed the learning modules.

You will learn everything needed to pass your DSC1 theory exam via our new learning portal. Each topic has been broken down into bite-sized sections that can be completed at your own pace, with the option to revisit sections for revision. We also know that everyone has a different preferred learning style, so we developed a suite of newly developed interactive resources, built to help you progress in your DSC1 journey.
You should be able to consistently hit a 4″ target at 100 metres and be able to shoot lying down, kneeling and off sticks for the shooting element of the assessments.

Your DSC1 Online: a course breakdown
You will study topics, including:
- Module 1 – Firearms and deer stalking safety
- Module 2 – Large deer – ecology and biology
- Module 3 – Small deer – ecology and biology
- Module 4 – Signs of deer and the damage they cause
- Module 5 – Deer and firearms legislation
- Module 6 – Shooting – equipment, ammunition and taking the shot
- Module 7 part 1 – Handling deer – post shot inspection and gralloching
- Module 7 part 2 – Game meat hygiene

The theory element has been developed by Mowbray Partners and is delivered through a structured and intuitive online learning platform, giving you complete control over how, and when you study. Once complete, you will be able to progress to the practical assessment stage.

We recommend that DSC1 candidates start studying at least eight weeks prior to the course date.
Members who hold a current FAC will be required to produce it for inspection at BASC courses or events.
All members will be required to sign the Section 21 declaration at each course or event prior to shooting.
Members must not be a prohibited persons under Section 21 1968 Firearms Act or under Article 63 2004 Firearms (N Ireland) Order.
BASC is working with a trusted third-party provider to deliver this course. Only your name and email address will be shared with them for course access.

Important note for your practical assessment:
If you are bringing your own rifle, it must be a deer-legal calibre and ammunition should be factory produced (no home-loaded ammunition). Rifles will be provided for those who do not own one.

DSC1 is a course specifically designed for any shooters who have recently taken up stalking and are seeking further guidance and training.
This course will provide insight into and a broader understanding of deer stalking techniques and deer management.
Those completing the course successfully will be awarded the Deer Management Qualifications (DMQ), DSC1 and the large game theory element of DMQ Wild Game Meat Hygiene.
BASC offers three different pathways to achieve your DSC1 qualification. You can choose between our:
- DSC1 online theory course, with a single-day practical assessment, to learn at your own pace.
- Expert-led DSC1 – a four-day classroom-based course with both theory and practical assessments on the final day.
- Assessment only – for those candidates already familiar with the course content and wish to go straight to the assessments.
