Aim

The intermediate deer course is a two day course designed as a step between DSC1 and DSC2 and the aim is to prepare students for the DSC2, and help any DSC1 holder gain further practical experience.

The course is designed to show the safe and correct way of shooting deer, retrieving, gralloching, inspecting and lardering the carcass. It allows everyone to be supervised on their first cull and provides practical experience in preparing the carcass for human consumption.

Candidates bringing their own rifle & non-toxic (e.g. copper) ammunition need to ensure the rifle is zeroed prior to attending the course. For further information on non-toxic rifle ammunition for this course, please contact nick.lane@basc.org.uk  .  Candidates must have sufficient ammunition to check zero on day one of the course and adjust if required, and to complete the practical shooting element of the course. (recommended no less than 20-40 rounds of the same batch).

On completion of this course you will be issued with the BASC Intermediate Deer Course certificate.

The BASC Intermediate Deer Course comprises of:-
• Stalking the deer or shooting from a high seat
• Taking the shot and reaction to shot
• Approaching the deer and follow up
• Extracting and transporting the carcass
• Gralloching and inspection of the carcass

The first day will consist of classroom training until mid afternoon after which you will go to the range for a skills test and to prove the rifles are zeroed.  You will then go out for an evening stalk, this will likely end around 8.00pm dependent on the number of deer culled.

The second day will start around 6.00/6.30am and should be completed around midday.
